Maybe I had become complacent in discovering new podcasts during the 2020-21 Covid-19 worldwide pandemic. Like many others, I was working from my home. This meant that I was not commuting, which had historically been the best time for me to listen to podcasts. Perhaps with so much chaos happening in the world, I felt like my brain could not absorb another bit of info, much less a new watch-collecting podcast. You can see from my overview article of the Best Watch Collecting Podcasts what I had already been listening to over the years. This included Hodinkee Radio, The Gray Nato, Worn & Wound, Tenn and Two among others.
Some of these watch podcasts are weekly required listening for me, and others get binged in large chunks. Which podcast I listen to just depends on the style of content I want. The podcasts can range from serious to wacky. I erroneously thought that I already had all the watch news that I could possibly need to be covered, but I was wrong. There are still fresh voices and opinions in the watch collector podcast space to be discovered.
Listening Later is Better Than Never
I am here to rectify my mistake with a review of the excellent 40&20 – The Watch Clicker Podcast, which I started to listen to in reverse order a few weeks ago. This goes against the grain of how I normally listen to podcasts, but this one has been on the air for several years already. I figured that the more recent episodes might be more relevant since the watch world has changed so drastically in such a short period of time. As evidence, BaselWorld is dead, in-person watch shows are just foggy memories, and watch companies seem to be releasing watches at their own pace over the span of the year. This is almost the opposite of previous years.
You could probably start listening to the 40&20 – The Watch Clicker Podcast from the beginning, in reverse order, or even cherry-pick the episodes you want to hear. The content is not always about the latest watch models like many other media outlets that re-post press releases. This gives the content a timelessness, without a shelf-life. The stated podcast mission is so good, I am going to just borrow it…
“The 40&20 Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by our partners Andrew and Everett. The show is aimed at watch enthusiasts and focuses on affordable watches and the brands that make them, the people and personalities in the community, as well as other topics including food, drinks, life, and other things we like.”
If this description grabs your attention, then you will love the 40&20 – The Watch Clicker Podcast. The hosts, Andrew and Everett, do not put on airs or use a thesaurus to sound enlightened. This is not to say that Andrew and Everett are not whip-smart. It’s just they do not have to prove it by alienating their audience with cork sniffing snobbiness, which can intimidate newcomers. This should appeal to most real-world watch lovers who use horology as an excuse to learn about history, tech, and design (and maybe to drink a few beers in the process).
Andrew and Everett equally pull their weight and have interesting opinions, what-ifs, and fun philosophical discussions about watch collecting as a hobby, what makes a great watch and more. When listening to the podcast, I felt like I was hanging out with my own longtime pals discussing the finer details of watches including what we like, what we don’t like, and sharing the love of these little ticking wonders on our wrists. Even when the hosts disagree, it is done in a way that does not make you feel like you are watching your parents argue. It’s all good and not cringe-inducing. It does not hurt that the hosts have known each other since college and practically live across the street from each other. The podcast is a thought-provoking discussion that may help to inform your own opinions as you make your watch collecting journey.
While 40&20 – The Watch Clicker Podcast can talk about other subjects besides watches near the end of each episode, I never felt that the hosts veered too far off-topic. I was going to ask them how they knew so much about so many subjects, but I already knew the answer. These guys are dedicated and willing to put in the time. It’s plain and simple. They are just like the rest of us watch nerds who will spend much of their free time ingesting information and meticulously researching watches to form their own opinions. They give great advice to all levels of watch collectors, but the focus is often on affordable watches. New watch collectors in particular will learn a lot. I did too and I consider myself an old salty collector by now. haha. Some of the episodes can be seen below.
But Wait, There’s More!
As you probably noticed by now, the 40&20 Podcast is partnered with watchclicker.com. This fantastic watch collecting website was started by an incredible photographer named Will. You will see his jaw-dropping photos throughout the site. I have to admit, that one day I hope my own Watchhunter.org site looks as good. The images, layout, and watch articles are inspiring and also bring new voices to the watch collecting community.
The articles and reviews give substance to many overlooked microbrands or mini-independents, or whatever people are calling the smaller, innovative (and affordable) watchmakers these days. Brands like Raven, Traska, Nodus, Norqain, and others get the recognition they deserve. Not because they cost less, but because they are good watches.
If you have been looking for new voices to learn about the joy of watch collecting, do yourself a favor and subscribe to the 40&20 – The Watch Clicker Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Podbean. You can also find all the 40&20 episodes on the watch clicker site here. Andrew and Everett will welcome you and make you feel at home. Also, subscribe to the watchclicker.com site for watch reviews and editorials that venture off the well-worn path of other watch sites such as Hodinkee, Worn & Wound, A Blog to Watch, and Fratello Watches. Both the podcast and website are worthy media sources to enlighten your mind and lift your spirits.
